Sweet Stylings: Rainbow Party

Since I was a little girl, I’ve always loved rainbows! The vibrant colors always seemed to put me in my happy place. For those who are familiar with this channel, it’s easy to see that nothing has changed. I still love rainbows more than ever, and love incorporating them both with my desserts, and with my outfits (I even have rainbow earrings!).

For this final Sweet Styling, I want to help you plan your very own rainbow themed party. I’m going to start off by saying this: don’t try and find everything rainbow! I know, you must be thinking, “but it’s a rainbow party!” Hear me out. Try thinking of the bigger picture, and of the entire presentation. Try incorporating each block of color individually, rather than clusters of rainbow patches all over your table. Check out this final presentation:

There are two rainbow desserts directly in the center, but that’s it. Surrounding are sections dedicated to a certain color of the rainbow. Color blocking is a great chance to bring a variety of different candies and desserts to your table, all in different colors.

First, I wanted to teach you guys how to make decorative tissue poms. These are my favorite party secret. They’re inexpensive to make, and are so elegant. These can really change the entire feeling of a room or display. I’m also going to teach you how to make it with dual colors so that you can use less to achieve all colors of the rainbow. Which two colors you use is entirely up to you!

You’ll need:

  • 2 colors of tissue paper
  • yarn
  • scissors
  1. With your two colors of tissue paper stacked on one another, accordion fold your paper, alternating back and forth.
  2. When completely folded, tie a piece of yarn around the center of the tissue.
  3. Use a pair of scissors to help shape the poms. Trim the top of the tissue to be more sharp or curved.
  4. Once you’re happy with the shape, pull the strands of tissue individually and pull them away from the rest of the accordion. Continue to do this until it creates the shape of your pom.
  5. Finally, attach the tissue pom to the wall used thumb tacks or double sided tape.

And, of course, let’s talk desserts. How many large desserts you want at this party may be influenced by how much candy you already have. My display has LOTS of candy, so I kept the large desserts down to a minimum. My mom’s favorite dessert is macaroons, so I couldn’t forget them. Macaroons are perfect for this occasion because they are usually very colorful. They can be a little tricky to make, so I would recommend going out and buying them. It will save you time in the kitchen, and will be stress free!

I also made funfetti cupcakes for my son (they’re his favorite!). I kept my buttercream frosting white, and decided to let the color come through with these purple cupcake liners for my purple section. I used an open piping tip to swirl on the buttercream frosting to look almost cloud like, and sprinkled on some colorful sprinkles over the top.

And for the main dessert, I wanted to show you how to make these awesome, vibrant mason jar cakes. Mason jars, while cute and trendy, are also so functional! You can bake your cake directly in the mason jar!

You’ll Need:

  1. Take some funfetti cake mix (store bought or any recipe will do), and follow the instructions to prepare the cake mix.
  2. Distribute the cake mix evenly into 6 or 7 bowls. Then, add a different food dye to each bowl. Blend well until the cake mix takes on that color.
  3. Transfer each color batter into a piping bag with an open end tip.
  4. Pipe your first batter directly into the bottom of the mason jar. Then, add another layer of a different color batter. Then another, and so on. Leave enough room at the top for your frosting!
  5. Bake at a moderate oven (175°C/350°F). It will take a little longer than most cupcakes just because of the size of the jar. Use a toothpick to check if the cake is ready. Stick it through the center of your mason jar cake. If it comes out clean, it’s ready. If not, it needs more time.
  6. Use a star piping tip to swirl your buttercream frosting just over your mason jar. Add sprinkles.

For these rainbow mason jar cakes, I actually decided to put them on a white stand. They have enough color going on. Place them in the center of your display, and showcase them as the centerpiece.

Let’s take another look at the final display:

You may notice a the green grass covering the display. This really helps give it that animated feel. We have the light blue wall, the clouds in the sky, and the grass below. This textured grass will impress all your guests, while simultaneously creating your fantastical rainbow ambiance. I also added elevated boxes to create different levels.

It’s also important to focus on other decorative elements, as well. I thought that the red and yellow bucket brought a big presentation to my table, while I was able to sneak other colorful candies in completely clear containers like mason jars. It’s also important to consider the heights of some of these containers. You might want some containers to be tall, while others to be short. It’s about alternating and balancing out these color blocks, shapes, and sizes.
