Frosting Styles Using Only a Knife

A common misconception in the world of baking is that you have to have fancy tools and equipment to decorate well. This couldn’t be more inaccurate!! You can achieve SO MUCH just by using a butter knife. I’ve frosted Pizza Party Cupcakes, Laptop Computer Cupcakes, and Sports Ball Cupcakes using only a knife.

Today I’m going to be showing you how to frost cupcakes 6 different ways using nothing more than a humble knife.

Tip: When frosting these cupcakes, make sure to push that frosting down and push it into the wrapper. This is great if your cupcakes pull away from the wrapper. It’s an easy cover up!

  1. Pile frosting high onto your cupcake. Use your knife to push some of that frosting into the cupcake wrapper, but not over the outside edges.

  2. Move your frosting side to side and spread the frosting evenly so that it goes over the outsides edges. It should be relatively more flat now.

  3. Wipe off your knife. Then, smooth out the very top , while spinning the cupcake in your hand.  Wipe your knife again, and scrape back the sides of the cupcake. Wipe in between.

  4. With your knife at an angle, rotate your knife around towards the center of the cupcake. This should look like a half circle that turns into a capital letter “J,” or a hook.

  3. Wipe the knife again. Use the back of the knife to smooth it off. Do somewhat of a swirling motion, wiping off the knife in between, until your frosting is a perfect dome.

  3. Wipe off your knife. Use the tip off your knife to slightly dig in your knife and pull up your frosting, and create the effect of grass.

  1. Pile your first color frosting fairly high onto half of your cupcake. Use your knife to push some of that frosting down into the edges.
  2. Use your knife to slice along the center to create a straight edge.

  3. Wipe your knife and add the other color to the other half of the cupcake. Push the frosting down into the edges, but don’t let the two colors meet in the center.
  4. Wipe your knife. Come around the outside of the first half of frosting with the back of your knife and scrape away. Pull the knife down towards the cupcake. Repeat with the other half of frosting.

  5. Use your knife to dome the top of the first half color. Wipe your knife, and dome the second half of the top. Wipe your knife. Then, run the knife over both halves of the frosting so that they blend in the center.
