Sour Patch Kids Cookies

Everyone’s favorite movie theater candy, Sour Patch Kids, have been highly requested on my channel for a while now. As much as I like the candy myself, I had a hard time figuring out what kind of recipe to even give you. I didn’t think sprinkling it directly on a cake or cupcake would be very tasty, or give these mischievous little Sour Patch Kids the credit they deserve. After some brainstorming, I’ve come up with the perfect recipes for these little guys: Sour Patch Kids Cookies! I’ve come up with some wild cookies in the past (remember the Pooping Rainbow Unicorn Cookies, and Popsicle Piñata Cookies), but I haven’t made cookies quite like this!

For this recipe, you’re going to need a delicious sugar cookie dough. It’s best to work with it just out of the fridge or freezer. You can find my favorite sugar cookie recipe here. The most challenging part of this recipe was getting these guys to taste like Sour Patch Kids. This lead me to try making a Sour Patch Kid reduction to add to my powdered sugar. This is also the most technically tricky part of this recipe. Make sure that it doesn’t get too thick, and add water intermittently.

What You’ll Need:

Frosting Recipe:

  • Approx 3/4 cup water PER COLOUR (to add to the melting sour patch kids)
  • 1 x 220g bag of Sour Patch Kids, divided into individual colours
  • 1.5 cups of sifted powdered sugar PER COLOUR

For the sour mixture:

  • 1/4 cup Citric Acid
  • 1/2 cup caster (superfine) sugar
  • Cookies
  • Food coloring

Instructions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 175°C/350°F (moderate oven).
  2. Work with only about ⅓ of your dough at a time.  Give it a quick knead and sprinkle down a generous amount of flour on your work surface and also on top of the dough
  3. Using a rolling pin, roll the dough out to about 2-3mm thickness
  4. Cut your shapes using your Sour Patch Kid template and a sharp knife. Place it onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Repeat for your desired number of cookies.

  5. Bake for 7-10 minutes – your cookies are done when they just slightly start to turn golden brown around the edges. Watch your cookies – there is about 1 minutes difference between golden brown and burnt so try to stay close while they’re cooking.
  6. Immediately place your cookies onto a cooling rack and once they are completely cool , decorate as desired.
  7. Heat up a pot on the stovetop. Add one color of Sour Patch Kid candies, and a bit of water. Add water intermittently so that the candy doesn’t get too thick, and so that it doesn’t stick to the sides of the pan.

  8. Pour the Sour Patch Kid syrup directly over powdered sugar. It should be a consistency that is easy to be pipe.
  9. Add a few drops of food coloring, and mix well.

  10. Transfer the frosting into a snap seal bag. Set aside.
  11. Cut the corner tip from the snap seal bag. Pipe the outer edge of the frosting, and fill in the rest of the cookie.
  12. Mix citric acid and caster sugar. Sprinkle it directly over your cookie (don’t be afraid to add a lot!). Then, tap off the excess.

  13. Pipe eyes and a mouth onto the cookie, and sprinkle your sour sugar mix over the eyes and mouth.

The slogan really says it best: “Sour. Sweet. Gone.” It’s true. They were quite sour, yet sweet, and they’re definitely already gone.
